Aging is inevitable, but that doesn’t make it easier. With old age come biological and psychological changes, as well as chronic illness, physical disabilities, and psychiatric conditions like dementia, insomnia, and other neurocognitive disorders.
Geriatric psychiatry emphasises the natural aspects of normal aging, the psychiatric effects of acute and chronic physical illness, and aspects of pathology in relation to disturbances of older age. Elderly care focuses on prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, and a personalised treatment to help its patients cherish each moment of their lives by managing their overall health and well-being.
SMART, in collaboration with Satyak Assisted Living, is excited to create a nurturing home environment for the elderly.
On September 21, 2022, World’s Alzheimer’s Day, SMART has inaugurated the Smart Memory Clinic in collaboration with EISAI (Japan) to cater to Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. We have a psychiatrist, Dr. Swapnil Deshmukh, and a psychologist, Ms. Simran Alekar, to provide comprehensive screening, assessment, and treatment for dementia patients. We also provide supportive counselling to the family members of the patients.
Memory clinics can help patients and carers navigate the disease management journey. Under the expert guidance of neurologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists, patients are given comprehensive support so that they can live with dignity. Various brain games, music therapy, physiotherapy, and much more are part of a memory clinic. Memory clinics also support and train carers so that they can better manage patients. It also supports carer stress gement.
Memory clinics organise screening camps to help in the early diagnosis of dementia. Early diagnosis is especially important in ensuring early treatment initiation, which leads to a slower progression of AD and thus better QoL in patients. The services can help individuals come to terms with their diagnosis and provide useful strategies and treatments to minimise their memory difficulties.
